#4: world’s end, girl’s rondo – Kanon Wakeshima (Selector Spread WIXOSS)

(Light WIXOSS Spoilers)

The Selector WIXOSS franchise is definitely one of the more formative series in my growth as an anime watcher. It was one of the original shows I got involved with other parts of the franchise, picking up and learning the card game the show is based around and later bringing my friends into it, and the second season of WIXOSS was the first show I watched in full while it was airing. The WIXOSS franchise definitely holds a special place in my heart and no small part of what makes me love WIXOSS so much is the opening sequence to the show’s second season, “world’s end, girl’s rondo”. The OP has stood as one of my absolute favorite OPs since I first watched the show over two years ago and for very good reason.

Starting first with the visuals, the biggest thing I have to applaud about “world’s end, girl’s rondo” in a visual aspect is the OP’s use of colors. The very beginning of the OP features heavy use of blacks, whites, and greys, giving the background and setting a very bleak start, syncing well with the surprise twist ending of the show’s first season, Selector Infected WIXOSS. However, as the main characters enter in during the lead-in to the first verse, they are filled with bright colors, greatly contrasting the dark backgrounds. Mayu’s “white room” is also featured predominantly as a backing during the first verse, with the bright colors of the characters contrasting their bleak setting. Then, as the lead-in to the chorus picks up and Ruuko falls into the dark abyss and into the battleground, the chorus springs the scene to life with bright flashy battles between the various LRIGs featured within the second season, with the LRIGs “painting” the dreary backgrounds with their battles. The battles are flashy and draw the eye, while also providing that pump-up and excitement leading into the episode.

Moving on, moreso than the visuals, the music was the biggest reason for the high ranking of the Spread OP. As I said before, “world’s end, girl’s rondo” is one of my all-time favorite OPs from a musical standpoint and it’s a song that always gets my blood pumping and gets me going when I listen to it. It’s a song that I’ve come back to many times over the past two years, and for good reason. The instrumental is godly, with a moody and yet driving, full-throttle orchestra and piano providing the OP with a unique sound that the song makes its own. Wakeshima’s vocals are haunting and add a lot to the OP. The lead-in to the chorus of “We Cry OPEN!” is one of my all-time favorite moments from a Japanese song and it is burned into my brain to the point where, even if I’m not before or if I’m with people, I will instantly sing along when it happens. It perfectly accompanies the shift into the chorus and makes the song evolve into a powerful, full-throttle roller coaster of excitement. “world’s end, girl’s rondo” is an absolutely fantastic opening sequence that has been one of the most memorable for me over my years of anime watching.
